You will most likely need at least two letters of recommendation as part of the application process.
The best recommendations will come from people who know you well and can offer specific information about you as a student, person, or employee.
The sample recommendation letter shown below has been reprinted with permission from EssayEdge. However, it is a good example of how a business recommendation should be formatted for a fellowship application.
I am proud to recommend a beloved student, Kaya Stone, for your fellowship program. I was asked to write as one who has functioned in the capacity of an employer of Kaya, but I would first like to say a few words about him as a student. Kaya is a highly intelligent, perceptive young man. He came to our institution committed to capitalizing on the opportunity of his third year of study in Israel, and he left with the satisfaction of having accomplished that goal.
Kaya grew in learning, in character, in his depth of understanding. He seeks truth in each area of his life, whether in learning, discussing philosophy, or relating to his fellow students and his teachers. As a studentKaya is outstanding. As an educator, I have watched him grow, seen his talents and abilities not only in the classroom but outside its walls when interacting with all types of people as well. This has included the text for many public relations brochures and packets, letters to parents, potential donors, and alumni, and essentially any correspondence which I have requested that he compose.
The feedback is always overwhelmingly positive, and he has done so much in that way for our yeshiva. Even today, while he studies elsewhere, he continues to do a great deal of this work for our institution, in addition to the recruiting and other services he performs for the yeshiva.
Always, in his work, Kaya is consistent, dedicated and passionate, enthusiastic, cheerful, and a pleasure to work with. He has incredible creative energies and a refreshing idealism tempered only enough to accomplish what needs to be done. I highly recommend him for any position of work, leadership, education, or any other capacity in which he can spread his excitement and share his talents with others.
At our institution, we are expecting big things from Kaya in the way of educational and communal leadership in the years to come. And knowing Kaya, he will not disappoint, and probably will exceed our expectations. Share Flipboard Email. Karen Schweitzer. Business Education Expert. There are numerous scholarships out there for students entering college, and each has its own special set of guidelines. A recommendation letter for scholarship from teachers, counselors, and other important people in a student's life can serve as powerful testaments to a student's past and future achievements.
As an English teacher and college counselor, I put a lot of time into crafting personalized letters of recommendation for students applying to scholarships. In this article, I discuss what exactly should go into an effective scholarship recommendation letter, along with the importance of tailoring your letter to the scholarship at hand.
So how exactly should recommenders frame their letters to best help their students win a scholarship? And what purpose do reference letters serve as scholarship committees sift through applications? A letter of recommendation for scholarship can accomplish a number of things within a student's scholarship application. First, they can act as strong endorsements of a student, praising her academic and personal qualities and expressing confidence in her future success.
The best letters allow a student to transcend her resume and come alive, so to speak, as a multi-dimensional person to a scholarship committee.
They also show that she has people in her life motivated to speak on her behalf. While illuminating a student's impressive qualities her compassion, energy, or leadership skills, for instancea recommendation letter provides further evidence that the student is qualified to receive the scholarship.
Most scholarships are awarded for students with specific commitments or goals. They might be awarded to students pursuing engineering, math, science, computer science, or literary studies. Recommendations should be customized to each scholarship. For those scholarships geared toward students that have financial need, a recommendation letter may discuss a student's ability to succeed despite limited resources.
A recommendation letter for scholarship can complement and add to the story a student tells in her application about who she is and why she deserves it. In order to do this successfully and accurately, you, as the recommender, should first gather essential information and brainstorm ideas before beginning to write. Since letters of recommendation carry such weight, first you should ask yourself if you can write a genuine and meaningful letter of support for the student. If you feel you don't know her well or have little to share on her behalf, then your letter could come off as lukewarm or uninformed, both of which would add little, or could even hurt, her chances. When you apply for a travel grant, you have to include a justification for it in your application letter.
It basically boils down to the question: Why should YOU be supported with this travel grant and why do you need and deserve it. This is considered one of the most important parts of your application, as it shows the reviewers why you should be considered for the grant and that you really have a good reason to apply. The justification part of your application letter is where you explain, why you need support to attend the event you are applying for.
It helps if you can state that you would not be able to attend if you do not receive a grant. If the reviewers get the impression that it does not really matter to you if you get support or not because you will be going anyways — your chances of receiving support go down.
Normally, reviewers have the goal to have as many people go to events as possible, so if they feel like you will be a participant anyways, they might be less inclined to support your application.
You should also be very clear in answering the question, why you in specific should be supported with a travel grant. Do you belong to an underrepresented minority? Would this be the first time you would be able to attend such an event? All these things can contribute to a sense of urgency with the reviewers to give you the grant. Make sure you point these arguments out so that it is easy for the reviewers to see and understand. When describing why this event is important for your career and what you will learn from it, make sure to be precise.
Everybody knows that a conference is good to network. Try to be very clear about with whom you want to network and which benefit you are expecting from it. The more details you can give about the event and the things you expect to be able to take away, the more you show to the reviewers that you are really passionate about this event and have done your homework about it.
